Telemedicine is the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease where the delivery of care is not in person. Although the definition by organizations, countries, and states may differ slightly, the function is generally the same. There are also several different names for telemedicine including telehealth, digital health, and connected care. Generally, telemedicine does not include commercial products such as exercise apps where the organization does not take on professional medical responsibility for the health of the patient.
A telemedicine emergency is a critical status during a telemedicine visit which threatens a life or limb. The most common telemedicine emergency is a psychiatric crisis where the patient has a reasonable probability they will commit suicide. Remote monitoring emergencies may include new cardiac arrhythmias discovered during cardiac monitoring and extreme high blood pressure discovered on blood pressure monitoring.
